Abstract: | This study, titled “Audience of Local Radio Programs Addressing Disability Issues in Algeria,” aims to answer the following main question: How do radio programs dedicated to disability issues, broadcasted through local radio stations, contribute to satisfying the needs of the disabled community within their audience? The study also aims to identify the motivations of the researchers for following radio programs dedicated to people with disabilities, uncovering their needs that they seek to fulfil through listening to these programs. Additionally, it aims to understand the audience’s expectations regarding these programs. This descriptive study relies on a set of methodological procedures, including the use of a survey tool to collect data and information. Observation and interview tools were also used as auxiliary tools. The questionnaire was applied to the purposive sample represented by the audience of the radio station from the category of people with disabilities. After data collection and analysis, the study concluded with several findings, including: • The study results indicate that among the most important motivations for the researchers to listen to radio programs for people with disabilities are: belonging to this category, followed by the programs addressing their concerns, and then because it concerns people with disabilities as well as advocating for the rights of people with disabilities. • The study shows that social needs are the most met needs by radio programs for people with disabilities, followed by informational needs, then cognitive needs, followed by cultural and sports needs. • Among the most satisfying aspects achieved by following radio programs for people with disabilities by the researchers are: getting news and following events related to people with disabilities (media satisfaction), followed by media interest in people with disabilities, then raising awareness of disability laws (knowledge and advocacy satisfaction), followed by interaction, forming social relationships, and sharing interests (social satisfaction), and finally, obtaining assistance and solving financial problems (economic satisfaction). • It was found that the most significant shortcomings of radio programs for people with disabilities, according to the researchers’ opinions, are the lack of involvement of people with disabilities in all their spectrums in the preparation of these programs to know what is lacking and matters most to this category more than others. Additionally, there is a need for more attention to addressing fundamental and sensitive topics for the category and to present them more seriously. There is also a necessity to introduce modern technologies in preparing programs for this category. |
